3-Day Kibale Chimpanzee Trekking Experience

Overview

This 3-day chimpanzee trekking safari takes you to Kibale Forest National Park. In this reserve are several spectacular crater lakes and swamps. This park is home to around 13 primates among them you will meet the chimpanzees which have DNA close to that of humans. Other wildlife species include; 70 species of mammals as well as over 375 bird species. The major activities to be done will be chimpanzee trekking through the forest, and the Bigodi wetland walk.

Itinerary

You'll be collected from the airport.
Accommodation before the tour starts can be arranged for an extra cost.
You will be picked up after your breakfast from your hotel by our guide who will brief you about your tour and then depart for Kibale Forest National Park which will take five and a half hours of driving.
After lunch, you will be taken for a Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary walk. This guided swamp walk takes you closer to seeing primates mostly monkeys, birds, and butterflies. The wetland is a bird paradise with about 138 species and is best known for being home to the great blue turaco.
This is a 2½ - 3 hour walk and is a must for bird lovers. Hopefully, you will spot the elusive Sitatunga antelope and the shoebill stork. This is nothing to be missed. You will meet some of the primates here, even a chimpanzee at times. Other primate species include the black-and-white Colobus, grey-cheeked mangabey, red-tailed, l’Hoest’s and blue monkeys, and olive baboons. Also, bushbucks, mongooses, and many more can also be found here. You will later return to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

Kibale Forest National Park boasts the highest number of primate species in the world, including the chimpanzees. Approximately 5,000 chimpanzees live in the wild in Uganda, which makes it a perfect place to spot them!
The park is popular for its primate population like the chimpanzees, colobus monkeys, red-cheeked monkeys, and red-tailed monkeys. On your chimpanzee trails, these are regularly seen swinging in the forest trees and others feeding on the wild fruits. An experienced ranger will take you chimp tracking in the morning around 6:30 a.m. Once you locate the chimpanzees, you will have a full hour with them. You will return to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

You will wake up early in the morning, have your breakfast, end your stay in the "land of the great apes" and depart with great memories of the moments spent with the fascinating chimpanzees. You will transfer back to Kampala with lunch en-route. You will reach later in the evening and catch your evening flight back home.

How fit do I need to be to do this trek?

To trek in Kibale Forest National Park, you need to be reasonably fit, as you will be walking in a tropical rainforest with uneven terrain. However, the park offers various trails for different fitness levels

Are there any age restrictions for gorilla trekking?

Yes, gorilla trekking permits are limited and subject to availability. The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years old.

How long do we walk every day when doing Kibale forest trekking?

- The chimpanzee habituation experience starts at 5:30 a.m. and ends at 7:00 p.m.
- The night forest walk lasts for about one and a half to two hours.
- The nature walks and forest hikes usually begin at 8 a.m. and last for 2-5 hours.
